What's it like starting as an Air Cadet?
"I remember joining the cadets head first, not knowing what I would encounter. But since I’ve been in the air cadets it’s taught me a lot of things such as: discipline, how to be a leader, how to fly a plane and many more other things. I took part in the Cosford march a year ago which is where you complete a 50 mile march in two days, which came with its highs and lows. One very low for me was the second day, were my entire lower body was in agony, but with my friends encouragement I was able to complete it and that is what makes the air cadets." “When joining cadets, your experience and achievements are all based on what effort you put into it. This is one thing I took seriously and as a result I have achieved many things. One achievement I take much pride in is completing The Cosford March, which was a long-distance march of 50 miles over two days. Another thing I am very proud of being a part of Staffordshire Wing Marching Band. Having been quite musical since an early age, joining the Band was, without a doubt, the best thing I have done in cadets. Other things I have completed is the strenuous Swynnerton leadership course, a certificate in St Johns activity first aid and achieving the rank of Sergeant, which in itself has opened up many other opportunities. Furthermore, achieving the rank of Sergeant has greatly improved my confidence and leadership skills: something that will stay with you forever. Been an Air Cadet has and will always be the best thing I have done to this date. Nothing beats been launched into the air in a glider or looping around in a Grob Tutor. In the future, I am going to be completing my Gold Duke of Edinburgh, an expedition along the Laugavegur trek in Iceland and be a part of the air cadet national concert band” Sergeant Smith |

"During my time as a Cadet at 425 I have managed to progress through the relevant badges whilst also gaining a wide variety of achievements and experiences which in turn have helped my confidence. I have completed Bronze DofE, Gold First Aid, Swynnerton Leadership Course, bronze wings, bronze cyber and bronze comms. Alongside this, I have won two National competitions as a member of Staffordshire Wing Band (Which I am currently the Drum Major of). A key aspect of cadets to me is being able to give back to the organisation and help younger cadets reach their full potential whilst being a helpful hand for staff. I have exemplified this through taking on admin roles, instructing a variety of J/SNCO courses, teaching and assessing First Aid plus many more. In the future I’d like to continue this development and open myself to new opportunities. This is particularly true in my work towards the new flight systems and the ongoing mentor-ship within the NCO Team." Cadet Warrant Officer Mansell |
